Truck door lettering rules, in plain English.

If you run under a USDOT number, federal rules require your name and USDOT number on both sides of the truck, in letters that contrast with the paint and read from 50 feet. Missing or faded lettering is one of the easiest violations for an inspector to write. We make the set, cut from premium vinyl and pre-spaced on transfer tape, so it goes on straight the first time.

What does federal law require on a truck door?

If you operate a commercial motor vehicle under a USDOT number, 49 CFR 390.21 requires your legal name or a single trade name and your USDOT number on both sides of the power unit.

  • It contrasts sharply with the paint behind it.
  • It can be read from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is parked.
  • It stays in good condition, so faded or peeling numbers can count against you at inspection.

Which numbers go on the truck: USDOT, MC or CA?

USDOT is the one the federal marking rule requires. The MC number is optional under that rule, and California intrastate carriers with a CA number generally display that too.

  • USDOT number: required on both doors for regulated carriers.
  • MC number: not required by the marking rule, but many carriers add it because brokers and shippers look for it.
  • CA number: issued by the CHP to California carriers and generally displayed on both sides.

Every extra line goes on the same decal at no extra cost, so most carriers add all the numbers they hold.

What do California contractors have to put on their trucks?

Contractors display their business name and CSLB license number on the work vehicles they use in their business, in large, clearly visible print.

This applies to the trucks and vans you drive to jobs, not just big rigs, and it doubles as free advertising every time you park at a job site. Design contractor lettering →

What goes on a tow truck door?

Your company name and the numbers you operate under, plus a phone number so people can actually call you.

If the tow truck runs under a USDOT or CA number, the same display rules as any other commercial vehicle apply. Design tow truck lettering →

How big should the letters be, and what color?

The federal rule is about being readable from 50 feet rather than a set size. Most carriers use 2 inch numbers with a larger company name.

Color matters as much as size. Dark letters on a white or silver door and white or gold letters on a dark door are the safe choices. Our designer warns you if your letter color is too close to your paint.

Magnetic signs or vinyl lettering?

Both are allowed as long as they meet the same readability rules. Vinyl is permanent and cleaner looking; magnets are better for leased trucks or vehicles you also use personally.

Magnets need a flat steel door and should come off now and then so moisture doesn't get trapped. Aluminum or fiberglass doors need vinyl. We make both: car door magnets and cut vinyl.

How do you put door lettering on?

Clean the door, tape the decal in place, peel the backing, and squeegee from the center out. Both doors take about 15 minutes.

  • Wash the door and wipe it with rubbing alcohol so nothing sits under the vinyl.
  • Apply in the shade between about 50 and 90 degrees.
  • Wait a day before a car wash so the adhesive can set.

The stuff drivers ask before ordering.

What has to be on my truck door for USDOT?

Federal rules (49 CFR 390.21) require your legal name or a single trade name and your USDOT number on both sides of the power unit. The marking has to contrast sharply with the paint and be readable from 50 feet in daylight while the truck is parked.

Do I need my MC number on the truck?

The federal marking rule only requires your name and USDOT number. Many carriers add the MC number anyway because shippers and brokers look for it, and it costs nothing extra on the same decal.

Do California carriers need a CA number on the door?

California intrastate carriers issued a CA number by the CHP generally need to display it on both sides of the vehicle. If you also run interstate, your USDOT number goes on too.

What do California contractors have to put on their work trucks?

Contractors with commercially registered vehicles display their business name and CSLB license number on each work vehicle, in print large enough to read easily. Our contractor template sets both lines for you.

Are magnetic door signs legal for DOT numbers?

Yes, the federal rule allows the marking to be on a removable device as long as it meets the same size, contrast and placement rules. Magnets work well for leased trucks and hotshots.

How big should the letters be?

The federal rule is about legibility from 50 feet rather than an exact size. Most carriers use 2 to 3 inch numbers and a larger company name. Our preview is drawn to scale so you can see it before you order.

Do I have to put the letters on one at a time?

No. Each door's lettering comes as one sheet, with every line already spaced and lined up on clear transfer tape. You tape it in place, squeegee it down and peel the tape off, and the letters stay put exactly where they were on the sheet. It takes about 15 minutes a door and there's nothing to line up letter by letter.

How long do vinyl door decals last?

Our Standard printed vinyl is laminated for outdoor use and lasts several years. Pro cut vinyl is premium cast material rated for about 7 years outside.

Be legal on the road by next week.
