Plumbing and HVAC van lettering: name, license number and address rules in California

Plumbing and HVAC van lettering on a truck door
Short answerCalifornia plumbing (C-36) and HVAC (C-20) contractors must show the business name and license number on every commercially registered vehicle, and plumbing contractors also have to show the business address on each side. Letters at least 3/4 inch; we recommend 1.5 to 2 inches.

The address rule most plumbers miss

Business and Professions Code 7029.5 adds an address requirement for plumbing, electrical sign and well drilling contractors: name, address and license number on each side of the vehicle. HVAC contractors follow the general rule in 7029.6, name and license number, no address. Get the trade right and the sweep is a non-event.

Layout

Name on top, address as one line, 'Lic# 1098765' under it, phone last. Five lines at 1.5 inch fits a Transit door. Put it on both front doors; the sliding door is a bonus, not a substitute.

USDOT?

Only if the van is rated over 10,001 lbs or tows over it. Most service vans aren't.

Related questions

Do I need my address on an HVAC van?

No, only name and license number. Plumbing, electrical sign and well drilling contractors need the address too.

Can I use a PO box as the address?

The statute says business address. A PO box you're registered under with CSLB is generally accepted, but the office address is safer.
