Cargo van lettering: which vans need DOT numbers and what contractors put on them

Cargo van lettering on a truck door
Short answerMost cargo vans are rated under 10,001 lbs, so they don't need a USDOT number unless they haul for hire or tow. What they usually do need is the business name and license number if you're a California contractor, and a phone number if you want the van to earn its keep.

The weight check

A Transit 250 or ProMaster 1500 sits around 8,500 to 9,000 lbs GVWR. Under the line. A Transit 350 high roof or a Sprinter 3500 can be 10,050 to 11,000, over the line. Check the door jamb sticker before you assume.

Contractors

California requires the business name and CSLB license number on every commercially registered work vehicle, at least 3/4 inch tall. Most contractors cut it at 1.5 to 2 inches so it reads across a job site. Plumbing, electrical sign and well drilling contractors also need the business address on each side.

If you're over 10,001 lbs

Add USDOT and, in California, the CA number. Same rules as a truck.

Related questions

Do I need a DOT number on my work van?

Only if the van is rated 10,001 lbs or more, or you tow enough to get there, and it's used commercially.

Does the CSLB number have to be on both sides?

The law says 'clearly visible location.' CSLB inspectors expect both front doors.
