Dump truck lettering: USDOT, CA number and the name on the door

Dump truck lettering on a truck door
Short answerEvery dump truck is over 10,001 lbs, so it needs the company name and USDOT number on both doors. In California add the CA number from your Motor Carrier Permit. Intrastate-only dump trucks still need the USDOT number in California and most other states.

Intrastate doesn't get you out of it

Most dump trucks never leave the state, and owners assume federal rules don't apply. California, Texas, New York, Georgia, Ohio and about 30 other states require a USDOT number for intrastate commercial vehicles over their threshold. Check the state page; California's threshold is 10,001 lbs and every dump truck is over it.

What goes on the door

Legal name, USDOT number, and in California the CA number. Two inch numbers minimum; dump truck doors are big and 2.5 inch reads better from a distance. Many operators also put the unit number on the door for dispatch.

Dirt, dust and vinyl

Dump truck doors get pressure washed weekly. Cut vinyl handles it; keep the wand a foot back from the edges. Reflective vinyl is popular on trucks that work night paving jobs.
